Mental Illness can
produce some amazing things that make us doubt our reality, or
accept the possibility that the mentally ill person's reality
may be real after all. After our Bipolar Disorder son jumped off
our 13th floor balcony, got up and walked away, he said he
was conversing with the eye of God, the angels were talking to
him and that he was one with God; after such an event we were
inclined to believe him.
We were
living on the 13 floor of an apartment building and had not
given it a thought that our son would jump off our balcony.
The night of
the jump our son was manic and by the end of the night he seemed
to be in a euphoric state. In this euphoric state he was
laughing, very happy, saying he was talking to angels and
talking to the eye of God; this was nothing unusual, apart from
the euphoric state he was in.
We went to
bed at about 11pm that night and were woken by a knock on the
door at 12:30am. I went to open the door by unlatching the dead
bolt, unlocking the door and undoing the security chain; there
stood two police officers. The police officers told me they had
a naked man in an ambulance downstairs and that he had told them
he lived here. In reply to the officers statement, I said, “I
don’t think so, only I, my wife and son live here and the door
has 3 locks, one being a safety chain that can only be locked
from the inside”.
I decided to
check our son’s bedroom and sure enough he was not there. I told
the police that there are only two ways out of the apartment,
one being the front door and the other the balcony; I decided to
check the balcony. The balcony door was open and there was a set
of footprints on the ground, and two hand prints in the snow on
the balcony railing; at this point I realized that my son had
jumped off the balcony (13 storeys up).
I asked the
police officers if he was still alive, they replied, “he was
walking around down there naked and some residents had called
the police; we called an ambulance when he told us he had leapt
of the balcony”. I then asked, “is he badly hurt”? They said “he
looks ok to us”.
I then went
down to the he court
yard, where the ambulance was
parked, with my son inside it. I asked the ambulance driver “why
are you not rushing my son to hospital?” The driver said, “He is
not badly injured, just a sprained finger”. I then told them,
“You realize that he has just jumped from the 13 floor balcony”;
I don’t think they believed me as they kept on filling out some
paper work. The police officers came to the ambulance and
confirmed that it looked like our son had jumped off the
balcony. The ambulance drivers said they would take our son to
the hospital and have him checked out.
When we
arrived at the hospital, about half an hour later, our son was
lying in bed conscious and saying the angels had asked him to
take a leap of faith to save the World. I asked the doctors,
“have you taken xrays?”, they replied, “no”. I explained to the
doctors that our son had jumped off the 13 floor balcony and
they really should xray and check him out.
After a few
hours the doctor came back and told us that xrays had shown our
son had a punctured lung, from what looked like a small tree
branch wound, and apart from a sprained finger he looked ok. The
doctors decided to commit our son to the psychiatric hospital
due to the fact that he had tried to commit suicide. Our son was
denying he was suicidal and was insisting the angels had said he
did not have to take the leap of faith, but if he did they would
protect him.
The next day
we realized what had happened, our son had landed on a
tree, but that was not the end of it; we visited our son in
hospital, where another amazing event took place.
